bobbi brown’s self-care advice for mamas

As a women-run and led company with a team comprised almost entirely of mamas, self-care is constantly on our minds (especially when we deal with the day-to-day demands of growing a small business by our bootstraps—self-care isn’t exactly synonymous with our current day-to-day). However, if anyone can speak to the subject it’s Bobbi Brown, the entrepreneur who has built a beauty emporium, published numerous books and now has launched one of our favorite wellness destination, Just Bobbi, where she curates products and tips to help all of us live happier and healthier lives. As a mother of three boys, her career and calm, composed demeanor represent major life goals.

Hi Bobbi! How do you define “self-care”? It’s a semi-vague but important term that means so many different things to different people.

BB: To know when to stop and take a break from my crazy schedule, and just do the simple things like watch TV or take a bath.

Was there an "AHA" moment when you realized you needed to start prioritizing yourself and well-being? Or has this always been a part of your life? Or was it a mix of both?

BB: Luckily for me, I have a shut off moment when I lose focus and have to stop and take pause. From a young age my mother taught me about the importance of taking care of yourself. We used to have beauty nights together when I was a kid. These nights showed me the importance of looking and feeling my best. They gave me a lot of confidence.

Any advice for working mamas trying to put this into practice, but feel totally lost?

BB: Breathe and try to incorporate your child into your daily life as much as possible. Also, you can’t feel badly about turning on the tube. [ed note: Bless you.]

What does a typical Monday look like for you?

BB: While my days are always all over the place, I consistently wake up and go to bed around the same time. I wake up around 6:30 a.m. (my husband and my dog, Biggie, usually get me up). I start off my day with my IPad reading The Post and checking Instagram, while drinking a Nespresso. I try to be in bed every night around 10:00 p.m.

On the other hand, what does a typical Saturday look like for you?

BB: During golf season, I know my husband will be busy for hours so it is “me” time. I love to relax with an espresso and my iPad, exercise, and probably work on an organizational project or two.

What makes you feel relaxed?

BB: Vodka and vacation.

What makes you feel energized?

BB: Espresso and water. [ed note: God you just get us.]

True or false: Sometimes wellness just has to take a backseat to the demands of parenthood and career. Please explain!

BB: False. You might have less time to devote to it, but it’s the little things that count.

What are some small changes working moms can make in their days to feel better overall?

BB: Drink more water, breathe, and take 15 minutes from your day to stretch and do pushups or sit ups – with or without your kid in the room.

What are the most common things you hear from working women when discussing wellness? How do you respond?

BB: Most women think they are not doing enough, and do not have enough time to devote to themselves. I tell them it’s the little things that add up to the biggest changes. You have to take time for yourself.

What are the wisest words ever uttered to you by a child?

BB: One of my sons said, “I don’t want toys, I just want you.”

 Thank you, Bobbi!
