the craziest teething remedies we’ve heard (+ some of the best, too)
At Doddle we pride ourselves on rethinking latent parenting tricks and tools. Just because something works, doesn’t mean it’s the best version of itself. Take the pacifier for instance, we knew we could make it even better. The teether is the next thing we’ve recast: The Chew is something far more than just a soothing superhero for gums. It’s also a fun plaything, with poppable bubbles that can keep babies stimulated and engaged. But we weren’t the first to rethink this essential object. “Necessity is the mother of invention,” they say and from frozen socks to wine corks—invention knows no bounds. We’ve rounded up some of the craziest and most creative remedies out there.
- Frozen socks. There are so many warnings that accompany this trick—no fabric softener, clean but not recently laundered socks, don’t let baby stuff the whole thing in their mouth, yadda yadda—BUT if you do it right it’s apparently a real miracle worker.
- Hanging an egg in baby’s doorway or closet. We know, WHAT?! This one’s not rooted in a bit of science but here’s the deal: Egg shells absorb carbon dioxide 7x’s their weight and carbon dioxide allegedly adds pressure to sore gums. Less carbon dioxide, less pain.
- Breast milk popsicles. These are exactly what they sound like—and chances are your baby will love them.
- Cold carrots. The firm texture, mildly sweet flavor and extra large size (no choking here) makes these a uniquely nutritious option.
- Vanilla extract. While vanilla smells divine the flavor is, well, not divine when taken straight up. But thanks to the tiny alcohol content in vanilla, we suppose baby’ll be numb before she realizes how potent the stuff is. Who knows.
And for an equally innovative but less DIY approach...
I have sent your teethed to my nephew for his baby. The parents and more importantly their baby LOVES it. I had ordered it a while back before it was available. I forgot all about the tether. I heard from the family last night and a baby with two new and painful teeth is very happy. Thank you Doddle And I! Keep me informed about any new products! Pop Pacifer and teether majorly successful in my family.
